Idea

Restful sleep is especially important after stressful and uncertain phases in life. Very often we aren't completely aware of how much our behavior in everyday life influences how good we recover.

Based on this—and as my penultimate project at IronHack—I developed a concept for an App, including a prototype, which the enduser can use for self-therapy or to improve their relationship to sleep.

Soft Landing helps to review the day, to reflect on one's own habits and to get into a regular evening routine.

I then incorporated some of my beloved illustrational motifs (sky, planets and universe) into a visual experience.

Most important functions

Reflection

1

You want to practise certain behavioral patterns during the day in order to better calm down better in the evening. Together we check how it worked today.
Diary entry

2

Reflection at the end of the day helps us to re-establish a relationship with ourselves, to perceive the extent of our own responsibility and also to lay down this responsibility again in order to be able to recover
Night routine

3

The app provides gentle suggestions to remind you of what you could do to get better rest in the evening.
Morning routine

4

When you wake up, we ask you how you slept. If there were any disturbing factors, it would be good to write them down. This helps us to better distinguish between factors that we cab influence and those that we cannot.

A more precise problem definition

Increasingly many people in North America and Europe suffer from insomnia. The medical field discerns between primary and secondary insomnia.

Secondary insomnia are sleeping disorders which manifest themselves as symptoms of a persisting cause. These can be seemingly harmless factors  such as too much coffee or occasional stress of work, or bigger issues like permanent overload, illnesses, side effects from medication, losses or traumas.

When sleeping issues persist, despite the absence of the above mentioned triggers, the medical field refers to this as primary insomnia.

The methods of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia to the latter problem.

Why does a psychological approach work as an app in this case?

If there are no external disturbing factors, it is mainly bodily functions that control sleep. Behavioral therapy is based on changing habits of thought first, and then habits of action. The effectiveness of online based therapy in general has been proven, also there is already research done on the subject of user needs.

Drawing on my background in philosophy, including philosophy of science, I was able to more precisely define my target group based on medical research.

Grants for artwork

To illustrate human behavior and habits I used this wonderful package created by Bonnie Kate Wolf for Figma (Thank You!)
